Pianist / Composer / Conductor / Artistic Leader
Native New Yorker Benjamin T. Rossen is a pianist, composer, conductor, and fervent leader in live performing arts. He is on the teaching staff at Harvard University's Music Department and the former Executive Director of Lowell House Opera (LHO), the oldest performing opera company in New England. Benjamin oversaw LHO's transformation through its largest multi-year fundraising campaign and four theatrical productions, including the 2024 world premiere of his original work The Unknowable: An Operatic Ballet in Two Acts. He was the music director and conductor of LHO's 2025 production of Postcard from Morocco by Dominick Argento.
Benjamin earned a Master of Music in Piano Performance from the New England Conservatory and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Music from Harvard University, graduating through the Harvard/NEC Dual Degree Program. He graduated from Harvard in three years.
At Harvard, Benjamin founded the Harvard Ballet Orchestra, which premiered original student choreography set to ballet repertory. By extension, he was the inaugural Music Director of the Harvard Ballet Company for its 30th season. Further, Benjamin was Music Director for the Harvard College Opera's (HCO) 30th season. He led HCO in its Winter 2023 production of Lehár's The Merry Widow, which also saw the premiere of Benjamin's original overture. For this composition, he was awarded by the Harvard Music Department the 2023 Hugh F. MacColl Prize.
As a pianist, Benjamin made his recital debut at age nine and concerto debut at Carnegie Hall at age ten. He has appeared as a guest artist with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, The Cliburn, and Music@Menlo. He was named a 2018 Finalist-Winner by the National YoungArts Foundation and a quarterfinalist at the 2019 Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition.
He has studied piano with Alessio Bax, Dang Thai Son, and Jeffrey Cohen. Benjamin is a 2020 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts and a Young Steinway Artist.
